Surface aeration is an established method for increasing dissolved oxygen and circulation in shallow to medium-depth waterbodies. A motor-driven impeller or propeller draws water from the upper layer of the pond and ejects it into the atmosphere, maximising the air–water interface and driving rapid oxygen transfer back into the water column.
The result is higher dissolved oxygen at the surface, improved circulation across the upper layer, suppression of surface algal mats, and reduced odour from anaerobic breakdown of surface organics. Surface aerators are particularly effective in shallow waterbodies (typically under 2 m), in ponds where visual water movement is desirable, and as a supplementary aeration source in larger systems alongside diffused aeration.
For sites where aesthetics matter as much as function, aerating fountains offer a popular alternative. They provide meaningful oxygen transfer along with a decorative spray pattern, though their aeration performance is lower than a dedicated surface aerator of equivalent power. Aerating fountains are well suited to parks, lifestyle blocks, golf courses, and corporate or residential ponds where visual appeal is part of the brief.
Compared with diffused aeration, surface units — whether utility aerators or aerating fountains — offer immediate, visible water movement and faster installation, but operate primarily in the upper water column rather than the full depth. This makes them best matched to shallower sites, or used in combination with bottom-up aeration for deeper waterbodies.
After many years of research, we believe aeration to be the foundation for improving and maintaining proper water quality in ponds and lakes. Lake bed aeration using the right lake aerator acts to increase dissolved oxygen levels while eliminating water stratification.

High-performance lake aerators designed for maximum oxygen transfer and superior circulation.
Kasco Surface Aerators are industry leaders, with more installations than any other brand. Independent testing at Auburn University found that Kasco’s aerators SAE reaches up to 1.36 kg of oxygen per horsepower per hour, ranking them among the most efficient surface aerators available.
Designed to agitate high volumes of water, these pond aeration systems maximize air-water exposure for superior gas exchange. Ideal when a fountain pattern is not required, Kasco Surface Aerators deliver reliable, high-performance oxygen transfer and circulation.
High performance surface aerators dramatically push high volumes of water into the air. This process increases the overall health of your water and keeps it thoroughly mixed. These self-contained units deliver up to 1.36 kg of oxygen per horsepower per hour of operation, making Kasco surface aerators the most dependable and efficient units on the market.
