Diffused aeration is a proven, energy-efficient method for restoring dissolved oxygen and circulation in stratified waterbodies. A shore-based compressor delivers compressed air via weighted supply lines to fine-bubble diffusers positioned on the substrate. Rising bubble plumes lift hypolimnetic water to the surface, breaking thermal stratification and re-oxygenating the full water column.
The downstream benefits are significant: aerobic conditions at the sediment–water interface suppress internal phosphorus release, accelerate microbial breakdown of organic sediment, reduce ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, and limit the conditions that favour cyanobacterial dominance. Compared with surface aeration, diffused systems are quieter, more energy-efficient per kilogram of oxygen transferred, and effective at depths well beyond the reach of mechanical aerators or fountains.
Diffused aeration is best suited to waterbodies over 2.5 m deep, and is often deployed as the foundation layer in a broader water quality management programme.
